The Venue
Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that opened in 1970. This week it plays as a par 71 at 6,828 yards, short by modern Tour standards. Fairways and greens are Bermudagrass, and much of the routing sits along the Atlantic. The signature hole, the 235-yard par-3 16th, plays across open ocean to a small, elevated green.
The Thesis: Wind Is the Defense
Yardage does not protect Port Royal. Weather does. Since 2019, winning totals here have ranged from 12 under to 24 under par. A spread that wide on one golf course means the wind draw writes the script.
Three physical variables carry the most weight this week:
Wind exposure. Calm days turn the week into a birdie contest. When the breeze is up, the edge moves to players who keep the ball in play and avoid big numbers.
Ball-flight control. A lower, penetrating flight and spin control into crosswinds matter more here than raw distance.
Bermuda greens. Grain and firmness change how putts and chips release. Comfort on Bermudagrass is a real input, not a footnote.
Form Versus Fit
The model reads two signals and does not let either one decide on its own. The four-week window shows who is striking the ball well right now. Course fit asks whether that game travels to an exposed, wind-set par 71 on Bermudagrass.
Strong recent form at a venue that suits it is the profile we look for. Hot form at a course that does not fit is discounted, and so is course history with no current form behind it.
